Alice Temperley for Barbour

Hello Ladies,

I was born in the land of Barbour, South Shields.  To me growing up the Barbour was a jacket your parents bought you, that you didn’t really like, but it kept you warm and dry.  Or a jacket you would see the local farmers wearing.  A far cry from the Barbour of today.  Within the last five years, Barbour has exploded in popularity amongst the young, many of whom have never stepped foot onto a farm.

Unfortunately, up North, the Chavs have also caught onto the Barbour trend.  Walking through any of the city centres and it is a mass of chav upon chav covered in quilted jackets.  I must admit this put me off buying one of their quilted jackets.  I now feel you can only get away with a quilted Barbour if you are over 40 and a long way from being labelled a Chav.  Unfortunately, Barbour have also started selling very bright jackets (the Rainbow International Jacket), ones which I don’t think look good on anyone over the age of 8.

I bought a Barbour for the first time about a year ago, it was a traditional wax coat in brown and I wore it to work all last winter.  It was worth the money as I was kept dry and snug all winter, so I can definitely recommend them for practical purposes.

Last weekend we returned from Brisbane and the cold was such a shock to the system that we went to Barbour on the Sunday.  I tried a couple of coats on and fell in love with a jacket from their Gold Label Collection.  The jacket was designed by Alice Temperley and is called the Bay Biker Jacket.  It is described on www.barbour.com as;

Barbour’s famous International jacket gets an Alice Temperley makeover: with feature 5/8 quilting in leather on the cuffs and shoulders – this is a truly fashionable take on a real Barbour classic. The four pocket configuration with the traditional belted waist reference the famous biker jacket, whilst the animal print lining, zips on the cuffs and leather neck strap give this piece a Temperley rock and roll edge.

I absolutely love the jacket, but I must say this is one that should not be worn on a farm.  It is far too glamorous.  I bought the jacket and it is one you can wear with jeans and uggs, or dress up over a LBD and some killer heels.

I must give the Chavs some credit, they are investing in a British brand and keeping this industry alive, a lead I think the rest of us should follow.  I love the Temperley makeover and it really gives this classic British a high fashion edge.

    I'm a guilty lover of the posts on this blog, I personally think that's a nice coat, its better than the kinda bland,padded Barbour jackets. I think the shoulder pads give it an almost "Armoured" look. I love retro stuff

    it's funny that for us who kno them it's a practical brand rather than a fashion one. i remember having a navy wax one when i was lil and i hated it! now i love getting a new barbour! do u ever go to their outlet on simonside? i got dad a one from there last year… just a lightweight quilted one for 'around the doors' xxx
