5 reasons people unfollow you on Twitter

From the Twitter chats I have taken part in recently, I’ve identified a few reasons why people will unfollow you on Twitter and wanted to share them with you as part of my ‘blog tips’ posts, as the last one was quite popular, “How to Increase Your Twitter Followers”. As previously caveated, I am not an expert in the field, or claim to know it all, but these are a few things I have witnessed bloggers tweeting as reasons they will unfollow you on Twitter. Some of them have been learning curves for myself, and I’ve stopped doing anything that is deemed ‘annoying’ by other bloggers. I hope these tips can help you too.

1. You Send Automated Direct Messages

Apparently automated direct messages are extremely unpopular, I was using them myself, just as a ‘Hi thanks for following me’, but I’ve turned them off since seeing the negative feedback. I have received some automated DM’s that literally just spam you with links, which I personally would find annoying, so I do see where others are coming from.

2. You Only Tweet Links

A bugbear of a lot of bloggers, including myself, is those accounts which only tweet links to their posts, if you run through their timeline, there will be no engagement with other bloggers, brands or friends, it’s just a platform for spamming followers with links. If you’re not interacting with your followers, then I’m likely to unfollow you too if I’m honest.

3. You Unfollow Me As Soon As I Follow You

This is a massive annoyance to me personally, the number of bloggers that will follow you, wait for you to follow back, then they unfollow you is astounding. I find it so rude and disingenuous. I don’t want to follow those people, I will unfollow you back. I wrote about this in my previous post about gaining Twitter followers. I use an app on my phone, Crowdfire, to monitor the people who do this, I bet you’ll be surprised! The absolutely worse offenders are those who do it to you time and again, so I just don’t bother following them back at all.

4. You Don’t Engage With Your Followers

I find it really rude when bloggers don’t engage with anyone at all. Yes some bloggers are so big and receive thousands of mentions that they can’t be expected to; I don’t expect to tweet Zoella and get a response, but if you’re not a superstar, don’t act like one! I have witnessed this behaviour from bloggers and it’s really unpopular with others.

5. You Just Spread Negativity

One of my goals in life is to stay away from drama, but it seems that every other week on Twitter there is some drama going on in ‘blogger-land’. I don’t like reading it or being involved in it, I don’t need that on my feed, if all I see is you causing drama, spreading gossip, or saying mean things about another blogger, I’m going to unfollow you. The amount of people who will openly ‘slag off’ another blogger, making it so obvious you may as well have just slapped her across the face, really irritates me. It’s not the playground and we’re all adults!

The top 5 reasons people unfollow you on twitter is a mixture of opinions I’ve collated from other bloggers, and reasons I know I will unfollow you for. I hope they’re useful and interesting, are there any points you’d add?

That is so true if people just spread negativity I immediately unfollow them! It really is just unnecessary. Great post 🙂

I HATE getting those automated DM messages when you follow someone, it puts me off following them so much! I try to respond to everyone that tweets me.

I wish I’d known sooner that people disliked them so much as I’d have turned them off straight away!! Xx

I have definitely noticed that I’m recieving less automated DMs than I used to. Maybe people are finally realising how annoying they are!

I’ve recently unfollowed one or two people who seem to enjoy spreading drama. I never seem to hear whenever these blogger ‘dramas’ kick off, and now I definitely never will. Just how I like it!

Yes, same! I still feel silly for not realising sooner that no one liked them. I just tend to come on Twitter and everyone’s complaining about something in one big gang. Never seem to be there for the start thankfully!! Xx

I cannot stand automated DM’s either, they cover up all my real messages! If I follow someone on Twitter there’s a good chance I’ve already checked out their blog/youtube/instagram so there’s no need to remind me again!
